International Women's Day in the Maritime Sector: Wendy Mejía

To commemorate International Women's Day in the Maritime Sector (May 18), we interviewed talented women who collaborate with Grupo Industrial Durandco and Blue Marine on the high seas.

In this space, we asked a series of questions to Wendy Selene Mejía Rodríguez, second cover officer. She is originally from Veracruz, but currently lives in Querétaro and has been working in the sector for three years.

What are your main responsibilities within your position?

A safe navigation guard, dynamic positioning operations, in which we carry out personnel transfer operations to platforms; we carry out diving operations, construction support operations with platforms. My main teams in charge are rescue equipment and fire fighting equipment.

What aspects of the maritime industry do you find most fascinating and exciting? Why?

I find it fascinating that I'm in charge of a boat, I'm in charge of human lives. The control of navigation equipment. And being able to move the boat from one side to the other seems incredible to me.

What has been the most significant or rewarding moment in your career so far?

To be respected in my workplace, which is currently Blue Marine. And, above all, to be recognized by my work team, who are mostly men.

What do you think Grupo Industrial Durandco and Blue Marine, which is a subsidiary company, has helped your professional development?

They have helped me both in my training and in my professional growth. Day after day I struggle and have a new challenge and a new learning at Blue Marine. I feel very proud.

How do you feel when you see more and more women working with you?

I feel a lot of pride and it gives me great happiness to see my colleagues in the middle. They have also fought, they have worked hard on board or on the ground anyway, and I know that it's not easy to get here.

What would you say to Wendy from 10 years ago?

That she is not afraid, that she does not doubt her abilities, that she does not doubt her knowledge and that she will be able to do that and much more than she believes.
